Baldur’s Gate 3's cat run is the purrfect way to play

The sheer endlessness of play in Baldur's Gate 3 is perhaps its biggest draw, which makes sense given its connection to the wider world of Dungeon & Dragons. Even so, players might not have expected to be queuing to bang bears or getting infected with the Mind Flayer parasite.

Baldur's Gate 3's weird and wonderful range of activities is a hugely defining part of why players have loved the game so much. Though we've had the game for almost a year at this point, you'd think we'd seen it all - but one new run is proving that we're not even close.

Player runs Baldur's Gate 3 as a cat

One Baldur's Gate 3 player has made an attempt to resist the very slim parameters of its rules by trying to play through the whole game as a cat. Players can transform into a cat if they use the Druid ability of Wild Shape, but Baldur's Gate 3 offers very limited gameplay to the player until they deactivate the ability.

Even though Baldur's Gate 3 issues some strict moments that demand players to be in their regular form, YouTuber Proxy has spent every possible moment as a cat, and it has led to a pretty bonkers run. The cat run features some strange highlights and has unveiled details about the cat form that we didn't know.  

For example, players will only take a single point of fall damage regardless of the height they fall from, and when in the grove to speak with Arabella, you can only speak with her Snake, who tells you that she won't speak to you unless you're at least humanoid. Pretty lame of Arabella, but okay.

While we once thought that every eventuality was considered by Baldur's Gate 3, the cat run has proved that there were a few blind spots in development, as the player had to return to their regular form for certain encounters.

We'll also admit that the cat isn't exactly battle-ready, making things tough when it comes to actual fights. To be clear, it's fair enough that a gap like this wasn't considered - we can't expect everything from Larian Studios. Still, with cat runs and sex runs, it shows that the devs have nailed almost everything else in 2023's Game of the Year giant.
