Bethesda is playing the long game when it comes to Fallout, and with Todd Howard recently warning the team isn't going to 'rush' Fallout 5, we doubt we'll be seeing it this side of 2030. If that's the case, it will have been a whopping 15 years between mainline Fallout games.

As Fallout 76 simply doesn't scratch the itch that many Fallout fans have, it's over to that same loyal community to create their own way to pass the time. It's not that we haven't had brilliant Fallout games come from the sidelines before, and seeing the success of 2010's New Vegas, gamers are trying to create their own superstar spin-offs.

Fallout: Nuevo Mexico is put on hold

As reported by VG247, plans for Fallout: Nuevo Mexico have been put on pause. Modding Fallout 4 has become a popular pastime, but with Nuevo Mexico, the team was using New Vegas as its foundation. The mod 'went dark' around two months ago, with social channels stopping posting or even removing content.

Supposed to take us on our journey into New Mexico, Nuevo Mexico is a follow-up to New Vegas, picking up five years after the events of that story. With the expansion being announced back in 2021, there were plenty of trailers and interviews to go off, with fans loving the feel of this New Vegas continuation.

Posting on the mod's Discord, Nuevo Mexico Head of Public Relations J.K-Serling said that Project Lead Zapshock was stepping away from the project. Things will now be handled by J.K-Serling. Saying the project has been on hold for some time, they reiterated that if Zapshock returns, he will only be in touch with developers and close friends.

J.K-Serling then followed up with another message, telling VG247, "In light of the questions raised, I wanted to clarify a few points. I am a close family relative of Zapshock, and along with Bishop (project coordinator) and Mr. Convict (lead outfit designer), we are fully informed about the reasons for the project's hiatus."

"It's a personal and challenging situation that none of us wish upon anyone. Zapshock is currently surrounded by amazing friends and family who are providing strong support. While we can't provide specific details, we appreciate the community's understanding and patience. Zapshock is in good hands, and we are all here to support him as he navigates through this period."

It's Fallout London all over again

This news is the latest in a bad run for Fallout spin-offs, with the long-awaited Fallout London mod also being placed on hold. The surprise release of the Fallout 4 new-gen upgrade apparently "screwed" Fallout London, which had already delayed its release date to try and avoid a clash.

Fallout London was a jaw-dropping idea that has been in the works since 2019 and even employed the voice talents of Doctor Who alumni Sylvester McCoy and Colin Baker. Todd Howard has reiterated that Fallout will never leave the USA, so we fail to see the harm in fans creating their own fanciful adventures in Blighty if the studio isn't.

As another goldmine of a Fallout expansion is exiled to the Wasteland (for now), we find ourselves questioning the franchise's future. Howard recently reiterated that there are no plans to stop content for Fallout 76, but we can't help but think there's a whole vault of talent being wasted in the apocalypse.
