Baldur’s Gate 3 teases console mod support - and we’re not ready
The reign of Baldur's Gate 3 seems far from over, as physical editions of the fantasy epic are still yet to hit shelves, and even though it's been some time since the game launched, players aren't any less willing to shell out for it.
The chaotic Dungeon & Dragons masterpiece is still earning its fans, and Larian Studios has proven that the underdog has the upper hand in the gaming industry. Plus, with a recent update unlocking some new romance paths, there's clearly more to see and do in the Forgotten Realms.
Now, a new announcement has got Baldur's Gate 3 fans incredibly excited about their second playthroughs, as it seems like console mod support could be on the way.
Mod support, including on console, is coming to Baldur's Gate 3
A new tweet from Larian Studios Director of Publishing Michael Douse has revealed a very big plan for Baldur's Gate 3 mods is in the works. Better yet, it could set a precedent for how game studios approach mods in the future.
"We generally don’t talk about things til they’re ready, but as you may have read, we’re making an exception," Douse’s tweet reads. "We’ve been working on a robust, cross-platform plan for mod support to be released later in year. We love our modding community and we want to support them. It’s coming."
He goes on to add that the team does have an operational system for mod support, but that there's plenty of testing that needs to be done before it's safe to launch in the game itself. "Our community teams will start talking with and looping in modding community," Douse adds. "For now, work continues.”
Mod support on console for Baldur's Gate 3 could be huge
It's great to see that Larian cares about its modding community, but the fact it could be coming to consoles is a game-changer. Bethesda has done similar things, with plenty of room to improve, and Larian's work could bridge the gap between mod support on console being a nice surprise and a core feature for future titles.
Baldur's Gate 3 is already a game that has made waves in the industry and has already led to developers working on similar projects, so this is an incredibly promising prospect. Mods on console could be about to become a mainstay. Thank goodness for that.
