Don’t expect Starfield’s rumoured PS5 port anytime soon
It's fair to say that Xbox's decision to offer its games to other consoles caused one hell of a stir. When rumours of Xbox Game Studio titles coming to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles hit Twitter, it lost its collective mind and theorised that this was Xbox stepping away from consoles.
Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer had to clear up the rumours and announce that only a select few titles would be making the jump for now, with the intention of bringing the Xbox catalogue to more players.
It's looking fairly minor for now, and it's clear that Twitter took it a bit far when it traded in its Xbox consoles in droves. Now that fans are theorising what could come next, and apparently, we'll be waiting some time for a major Xbox exclusive to switch sides.
Industry insider claims that Starfield on PlayStation is a while off
Fans have been wondering if Xbox's biggest game release of the last few years (the space-faring RPG Starfield) could be joining the small number of games shifting from Xbox to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. One insider has claimed that if it does come to happen, it won't be soon.
Someone took to Jez Corden's mentions and asked about the potential for an outsourced port of Starfield designed for PlayStation specifically. The insider responded by saying, "There’s no outsourced port. It just isn’t in development right now." Well, that clears that up.
Corden promised that we won't see Starfield announced for PS5 in 2024, let alone arriving on the console this year. Looking much further ahead, Corden speculated it would be at least "3+ years" and left a cryptic tease of, "That’s the only door I’m leaving open."
Some players have wondered what Xbox's next steps are after its first wave of games dropped on alternative consoles, but it's probably safe to presume that their current plan is simply to do nothing.
Xbox is likely to take a moment before bringing more games to other consoles
It's a claim that makes sense - after all, if Xbox is trialling its plan to bring Xbox Game Studios titles to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch with Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Pentiment, it's likely to wait to see how successful the ports end up being.
Pentiment arriving on the Switch makes just as much sense as seeing Starfield on PlayStation in terms of player bases, but it would also be of no surprise if Xbox was protective over the game. After all, it bought Bethesda outright.
If the Green Team can't keep Bethesda for itself every once in a while, it certainly wouldn't be making the most financially from the deal, as we know that money is always the real driver in the gaming industry.
We're going to have to wait to see what comes of Starfield, especially as there's a new DLC pack yet to come, but it’s likely we're not going to see it on PlayStation anytime soon. Sorry, you wannabe PlayStation astronauts will have to wait.
