Fortnite’s Pirate of the Caribbean collab is missing a major player
We're setting sail on the high seas in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3, and while we're used to racing around the desert of the Mad Max-inspired Wrecked season, Epic's battle royale favourite is getting a nautical makeover. Although we wrote off a previous leak that pinpointed a Pirates of the Caribbean collab, it seems we'll have to walk the plank.
Disney's live-action Pirates of the Caribbean franchise lies at the bottom of the ocean amidst uncertainty over a reboot and controversy surrounding Johnny Depp, which makes his return unlikely. Still, with the series having grossed over $4.5 billion at the box office, it was only a matter of time until Fortnite cashed in on it.
Fortnite's Pirates of the Caribbean crossover is a mess
Alongside the Metallica Fortnite Festival concert and the addition of the new Reboot game mode, Fortnite feels like it's stealing Warzone's Reloaded idea with a mid-season refresh. We're still waiting for Magneto to arrive in-game, but in the meantime, there's a Pirates of the Caribbean crossover just over the horizon.
In a marketing disaster for Epic Games, the planned Cursed Sails Pass mini-pass was released early. For a short time, players could buy the pass for 1,000 V-Bucks and unlock the free Jack Sparrow skin that came with it. Unfortunately, devs confirmed this was a mistake, and the pass won't be going live until July 19.
Still, the pass revealed everything that's coming, as well as the other skins. There will be five Pirates of the Caribbean skins, with the base Jack Sparrow and his Cursed Jack Sparrow skeleton skin coming as part of the pass. Elsewhere, Davy Jones, Captain Barbosa, and Elizabeth Swann are all coming to the shop.
When iFireMonkey showed off the skins online, fans were quick to notice that Will Turner is MIA. One disgruntled gamer wrote, "No Will? That’s not good enough." Another added, "Where's our boy :(," while a third said, "No Will Turner I hope this flops."
Given the popularity of Orlando Bloom's character and prominence in the series, it's a shame that Will is being forgotten here. Still, it was always a given that there would be at least one female skin, and we can't imagine the collab not including Barbosa and Davy Jones.
As the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise looks like it's moving past Will Turner, it seems it isn't alone in sending him adrift on the Seven Seas. Pour out a rum for Bootstrap Bill's boy.
