How to get the Loom & upgrade gear in Hogwarts Legacy
If you want to put on your enchanting hat (not literally) and upgrade gear in Hogwarts Legacy, then you're going to need to unlock the Loom first.
Throughout the open world of Hogwarts Legacy, the Loom's function is to add enchantments to gear and to upgrade their stats throughout the game - so read on for everything you need to know about unlocking the Loom and how to use it in Hogwarts Legacy.
How to unlock the Loom in Hogwarts Legacy
The Loom Spellcraft will be unlocked after completing the quest 'The Elf, The Nab-Sack, And The Loom'.
This quest is given by Deek the House Elf upon completing the main quest of Rackham's Trial and serves as part of the main story.
Deek will contact you if you are far enough into the game and meet the above prerequisites. After speaking with him in the Room of Requirement, Deek will teach you how to use the Nab-sack to capture endangered magical beasts and will give you the recipe for a Loom.
How to use the Loom
To summon the Loom into the Room of Requirement, cast the Conjuring Spell, go to the 'Utility' menu, and select the Enchanted Loom.
After placing it wherever you wish in the room, simply interact with it to bring up the loom menu, as shown below:
As with any piece of furniture, you can customise the colour of the Loom and change its placement with the Altering Spell.
Upgrading gear with the Loom
To upgrade gear, you'll simply need to select the gear item you wish to upgrade and click the button prompt for 'View Upgrade'. This will bring up a menu which will tell you what materials you will need to upgrade the gear and how much the stat increase will be.
You can collect these upgrade materials by housing and taking care of beasts in your Vivarium. Or, you can buy materials from various vendors around Hogwarts - the easiest of which to visit is the vendor from Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade.
Adding enchantments to gear essentially gives it a stat boost. This can mean a higher defensive rate against certain enemy types, an increase of damage when casting a certain spell, an increased damage to Ancient Magic etc.
To equip an enchantment to an item of gear, interact with the loom and select the gear item you wish to enchant. Then, press the button prompt 'View Traits'. This will bring up a menu of all the enchantments you have unlocked thus far, of which you can pick one to equip for your gear item.
How to unlock Enchantments in Hogwarts Legacy
Other than finding them in random chests throughout the world, the main way to unlock enchantments in Hogwarts Legacy is by completing combat challenges.
- Go to the 'Challenges' menu and select 'Combat' - here you'll see a multitude of enchantments available to unlock after defeating several enemies.
- In this menu, you can also prioritise which ones you would like to unlock first
Often, the type of enemy will correspond with the trait you will unlock. For example, defeating 40 spiders will unlock the anti-venom trait and defeating dark wizards will unlock better Protego shielding.
The 'Room of Requirement' challenge menu also offers increases to Ancient Magic damage in return for upgrading your gear a certain number of times.
Collecting upgrade materials
Upgrade materials for gear are usually animal by-products which you can get in return for caring for magical beasts in your Vivarium.
You can save beasts from poachers in the wild and bring them to your Vivarium. There, feed and pet them and they will produce materials every so often that you can harvest and use on your loom. You can also buy materials from the Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade, which will unlock at the same time as the loom and Vivarium.
