Final Fantasy 7 players miss the original’s old-school style
It seems that the dust has started to settle on the massive debut of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and it's safe to say that the latest chapter in the ongoing series of remakes has delivered massively for fans. Some were furious with how wet Cloud would get, but beyond that, the 2024 title was a blast for players.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's ambitions with the original title's story have come into question, but for now, players are thrilled and are wondering when the final chapter in the trilogy is coming. Despite all that lies before, the wait until the next game means some have realised that they're longing for the series' glory days.
Final Fantasy fans want the old gameplay style back
Gamers will never be happy, will they? Players have been taking to Reddit to reminisce about the trailblazing style of the original Final Fantasy 7 that was released in 1997. They're hoping that one day, we'll be able to see that iconic style return to the franchise.
"After finishing FF7 once again. I gotta say I really do love this Legend of Zelda type design they went with the characters," reads a post from u/MegaMan-1989. "It’s a shame that we never got to see this design again since it got replaced with semi realistic in the more recent FF7 games."
Players seem to agree, with one commenter adding, "I think Nomura's art has matured well, but I kinda miss his style from back then, and I wish Ever Crisis as a game just used his portraits and made models more cel-shaded or something and closer to the anime style."
"I think they're a great artifact [sic] of the time during the dawn of the first attempts at 3D models in gaming, in polygonal form," adds another. "Infinite nostalgia points. But even among the PS1 era games, I loved at the time and continue to think they really evolved in the best possible direction by time they polished off FF9, which has to be the prettiest and smoothest PS1 game ever created."
It's perfectly fair to be wistful about this, and to be honest, no other game looks like Final Fantasy 7. As the most expensive game ever made at the time, it was a genuinely impressive style. Even though it might not be as chunky and wonky, more Final Fantasy could be coming pretty soon.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 could be coming sooner than expected

As shared by GfinityEsports, the timings of development after Square Enix took full control back in 2017 could potentially make for a quicker turnaround with the unnamed end of the trilogy. This is especially true in the face of the team developing DLC InterMISSION just for the PS5.
Without extra DLCs as an obstacle, the third game could arrive even sooner. Without reasonable distraction, there's hope we'll get the third Final Fantasy 7 remake as early as 2027. Fingers crossed that it comes sooner rather than later, even though we don't expect it'll be quite as polygonal as some of you are hoping.
