Dragon’s Dogma 2 is here, and we've been able to play it for a while now - which means some might have already finished it and are ready for what's next.
There was a time when a sequel to the 2012 fantasy RPG from Capcom felt like it would never happen, a pipe dream for a dedicated fan base who fell in love with the game’s unique combat and epic world which they can soon return to.
Below you can find all of the games that are similar to Dragon’s Dogma 2 and well worth giving a go once you've seen all there is to see in DD2.
How we chose the best games like DD2
Dragon’s Dogma 2, despite being part of a tried and tested genre, remains very unique because of the combat that allows players to climb any monster during a scrap. On top of that, it also boasts a bombastic story, plenty of customisation, and an exciting open world to explore.
The below entries offer a combination of - if not all - a similar degree of what Capcom's latest RPG offers.
Best games like Dragon’s Dogma 2
11 - Monster Hunter: World
- Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
- Subscription Service: n/a
- Release date: 2018
- Key features:
- Prepare for and fight massive monsters
- Consistent progression
- Tonnes of weapon types and playstyles
The Monster Hunter series clearly inspired Dragon's Dogma and its enemies in a few ways, so it's worth trying its biggest and boldest entry after you're done with DD2. The core loop revolved around its name, with you hunting and trapping various beasts and monsters across an open world.
As you defeat tougher monsters, you can claim resources to invest in your gear and become stronger, unlocking new areas and even stronger bosses to conquer. It can easily occupy you for hundreds of hours, and with Wilds set to arrive in 2025, now is a good time to try out the franchise.
10 - Assassin's Creed Odyssey
- Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
- Subscription Service: Xbox Game Pass, Ubisoft+ Premium, PlayStation Plus Extra
- Release date: 2018
- Key features:
- Explore Ancient Greece and the Mediterranean
- Choices affect the story
- See the origins of the AC universe
Assassin's Creed Odyssey is one of the AC that games that went into a more RPG-focused direction, with the addition of levelling up and a bigger focus on loot. Set in the 5th Century BCE, you follow a Spartan mercenary in the Peloponnesian War as you attempt to track down a cult.
It has a bigger focus on the more mythological aspects of AC, with the type of monsters you'll fight in DD2 also making an appearance. With a massive and gorgeous world to explore, tight action and stealth gameplay, and a reactive story, it's a game to experience.
9 - Dark Souls (Remastered)
- Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
- Subscription Service: N/A
- Release date: 2018
- Key features:
- Arguably popularised a new genre
- Intricately designed, maze-like world
- Offers a genuine challenge
The original Dark Souls may seem like a strange inclusion considering there is no open world, but it has a sense of exploration that rivals games like Dragon's Dogma 2. On top of that, it has a commitment to a vision, that at the time was pioneering, and refused to give in to different values or ideas - much like Dragon's Dogma 2.
You will also be in for a world littered with interesting tidbits that will have you watching lore videos until the early hours of the morning, trying to figure out everything from Solaire's origin to why the Onion Knight loves a kip.
8 - Xenoblade Chronicles X
- Platforms: Wii U
- Subscription Service: N/A
- Release date: 2015
- Key features:
- Gigantic beasts to take down
- Large world to explore
- Mechs - need I say more?
While it might seem like an odd choice considering the larger woodland fantasy settings of both Dragon's Dogma 2 and many of the other entries on this list, Xenoblade Chronicles X is a fantastic jumping-off point after you've finished DD2 and want something new.
Featuring the gargantuan open world of Mira, it has so much for you to naturally explore as you continue your journey - and even mechs known as Skells that you can fly around after a certain point in the story.
If you were a fan of Dragon's Dogma 2's gigantic beasts then you're in for a treat here too, as there are some of the biggest enemies that you'll find in any game roaming the planet, and it's up to you to figure out how to take them down.
Perhaps the only caveat for Xenoblade Chronicles X is how hard it is to actually play, as it's exclusive to the Wii U - and with the eShop unfortunately closed, you'll have to resort to a disc copy. It's more than worth the effort though, so definitely consider it if you gelled with many of Dragon's Dogma's unique systems.
7 - Shadow of the Colossus
- Platforms: PS2, PS3, PS4
- Subscription Service: PlayStation Plus Extra
- Release date: 2005 (Remake 2018)
- Key features:
- A sense of scale unlike anything else
- One of the classic PS2 games
- Melancholic tale
Shadow of the Colossus was first released in 2005, yet there are still very few games like it today. It’s certainly very different from Dragon’s Dogma 2, except for one key detail: being able to climb the monsters you’re hunting. Few games can match the scale of Shadow of the Colossus, but Dragon's Dogma 2 comes close.
6 - Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Platforms: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
- Subscription Service: EA Play
- Release date: 2014
- Key features:
- Detailed relationship building
- Interesting characters
- Plenty of exploration
Dragon Age: Inquisition is another example of BioWare’s ability to tell stories using fascinating characters. By the time you've completed your playthrough, which is packed with twists and turns, you’ll have fallen in love with your party members.
Despite the game now being 10 years old, it holds up well and is still a blast to play. You’ll also be getting into the series at a great time with the sequel set to release in the not-too-distant future.
5 - Red Dead Redemption 2
- Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
- Subscription Service: N/A
- Release date: 2018
- Key features:
- Arthur Morgan and the relationships he builds
- Arguably one of gaming's best-told stories
- Realistic approach to gameplay
Red Dead Redemption 2 holds up as one of the best stories to have been told in a game, but the comparison with Dragon's Dogma 2 is more to do with the world.
Few games capture the sense of a living, breathing world like these two do, fulfilling the idea that even when you're not playing things would be happening that you're missing out on. Admittedly, the events in Valentine and beyond will be very different - but they'll still elicit those same feelings.
4 - Final Fantasy 16
- Platforms: PS5
- Subscription Service: N/A
- Release date: 2023
- Key features:
- A strong story with amazing voice acting
- Epic Eikon battles
- Varied combat
If you like a spectacle with your gameplay, look no further than Final Fantasy 16. Some of the fights you witness are on a scale seen in very few games, one of which is Dragon's Dogma 2.
The narrative is consistently engaging and is expertly delivered by an incredibly talented voice cast which helps sell the complex relationships on offer.
3 - Baldur’s Gate 3
- Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
- Subscription Service: N/A
- Release date: 2023
- Key features:
- Charming cast of characters
- Fully realised world
- Tactical turn-based combat
I’ve tinkered with the character creator for Dragon’s Dogma 2 and it's beyond extensive. So if you’re like me and you love spending hours designing and refining a character, then Baldur’s Gate 3 will be right up your street.
Another game with an interesting fantasy setting, whilst also offering some of the best relationships and characters games have seen in recent years. 2023 was an incredibly stacked year, but it didn’t stop Baldur’s Gate 3 from being recognised as one of the very best, even winning GGRecon’s Game of the Year.
2 - Elden Ring
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
- Subscription Service: N/A
- Release date: 2022
- Key features:
- Detailed and vast open-world
- Huge arsenal of weapons to try
- Plenty of different monsters
Elden Ring is one of the more recent releases on this list and sees FromSoftware develop its tried and tested formula, unleashing it on one of the most interesting open worlds you will find in any game.
There's always something to do with plenty of new weapons to try, NPCs in need of a favour, and even the infamous Patches returns to show his smug little face. Even if Soulslikes aren’t your thing, this is the studio's most approachable game yet and you can play it just in time for the upcoming DLC dropping in June.
The best game like Dragon's Dogma 2
1 - The Witcher 3
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
- Subscription Service: N/A
- Release date: 2015
- Key features:
- Amazing story set in the world of author Andrzej Sapkowski
- Deep roleplaying elements
- Unique monsters and enemies to confront
I thought long and hard about the game most similar to Dragon’s Dogma 2, and few seem to tick as many boxes as The Witcher 3. You'll spend your time exploring stunning landscapes and completing all manner of different tasks while also hunting a plethora of monsters along the way. If that doesn’t sound like a Dragon’s Dogma game, I don’t know what does.
