Highlights
- Baldur's Gate 3 has no crossplay
- There is cross-save functionality across all platforms
Crossplay and cross-progression are massively useful in cooperative video games, but does 2023's game of the year, Baldur's Gate 3, have these features?
The game sees you live out a full Dungeons & Dragons adventure with your own character, companions, and choices, and you can even play with a party of friends to really recreate the tabletop experience. If you have friends on different platforms, or you balance time between multiple platforms, it's worth looking into whether there is any cross-platform functionality.
Does Baldur's Gate 3 support crossplay?
Unfortunately, Baldur's Gate 3 does not support crossplay right now, so you will have to play with your friends on the same platform if you wish to adventure together.
However, when talking to Eurogamer, Larian's director of publishing Michael Douse has stated that crossplay is 'in the roadmap', so it might arrive in the game eventually. Larian even repeated its interest in the feature after the launch of the Xbox version.
There's still no date as of writing this, so we'll all just have to wait for any news. I'll also make sure to update this guide once the release date of the feature is announced.
Does Baldur's Gate 3 have cross-platform progression?
In excellent news, you will be delighted to find out that Baldur's Gate 3 does have cross-platform progression, meaning that you can continue your progress across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X with cross saves.
You will need to purchase the game separately on your chosen platforms though, as there is no cross-platform ownership in place for the game right now. But if you can afford it, it's a useful way of keeping your save going between platforms.
How to enable cross saves in Baldur's Gate 3
Here is exactly how to use cross saves in Baldur's Gate 3 across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X right now:
- Create a Larian account and log in using that on all platforms that you can use cross saves on
- Boot up Baldur's Gate 3 on either device and open up the 'Settings' menu
- Head to the 'Gameplay' tab and scroll down until you reach the 'Cross-Save' option
- All your saves will thus be uploaded, and can now be accessed from the 'Load Game' menu
Additionally, cross saves do not require you to have PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold, so you can play freely between platforms without having to pay extra for the privilege.
