Even in the distant future of Starfield, lockpicking is still a thing. That said, Starfield has a much more technological approach than the likes of Elder Scrolls or Fallout.

Lockpicking appears like a puzzle in the game, with increasing difficulty for higher-level locks. If you haven't tried it or need a refresher, here is how to break locks in Bethesda's latest RPG.

How to find Digipicks in Starfield

Digipicks can be found all over Starfield, and they’re essential for lockpicking, so you'll want to ensure to stock up. if you’ve played Elder Scrolls or Fallout you’ll know what to expect, as you can find them on defeated enemies or in random locations all over the worlds - so be sure to check different areas for loot as you travel to find more.

You can also snatch them off someone by pickpocketing them if you fancy roleplaying as a thief. If that doesn’t sound appealing, you can simply buy them from various vendors in the game too. They’re pretty cheap, but you’ll find plenty for free out in the world too.

The more you explore, the more Digipicks you’ll find in Starfield, so make sure you’re always looting bodies and checking if merchants are selling them.

And if you’re really desperate for lockpicks and you’re not averse to cheating, you can also try your hand at using Starfield's console commands to quickly spawn some in a pinch if you're a PC player. By pressing the ~ (tilde) key on your keyboard and entering 'player.additem a [100]', you’ll get 100 Digipicks, and you can change the number to however many you want.

How to pick locks & unlock safes

Locks in Starfield require you to solve a puzzle featuring different layers of security, and you need to fill in all open slots in every layer to open the lock or safe.

Follow the steps below to lockpick in Starfield:

  • First, select a key and rotate it until the key lines up with the gaps in the layer
  • Next, slot the key in to fill the gap. You need to be smart about the order you fill the gaps here, as you can only move on to the next layer after you finish your current one - we'd recommend cycling through each key until you find one that fills all the gaps in the outer layer
  • Position your key so that it lines up with the gaps in the layer and press the 'A' button to slot it in

It might take a little bit of time to get used to, but with some practice, you'll get used to the process of lockpicking in Starfield in no time.

What's more, you can make this even easier by upgrading your Security skill. Each tier of the skill will grant you the ability to unlock harder locks, from Advanced to Master. It’s also a good idea to keep lots of Digipicks on you so you can unlock more locks as you travel.

So that's everything you need to know about lockpicking in Starfield. For more guides on everything relating to the Settled Systems, check out our Starfield homepage, or take a look at how to holster or put away your weapon, how to find all snow globes, and the best mods you can install on PC.
