G2 Mikyx explains tackling MSI overconfidence and scrim potential
Coming into MSI 2023, G2 Esports had undergone quite a shift in momentum. Having already secured their qualification in the Winter Split, a vastly more competitive Spring Split saw LEC sides find their own feet and begin to push each other to the brink of the potential.
But when the world gathers on European turf, the beast that rests within the bellies of G2 Esports players awakes, and League of Legends coming to London for MSI 2023, it has given the LEC stalwarts the opportunity to show the world exactly why they should still be considered as one of the worlds best teams.
Finding themselves in the Play-In Stage, G2 Esports had to stamp their authority on MSI 2023 early if they wanted to be considered as a serious contender to take it all, and with their first match-up against LOUD, the Spanish organisation did just that.

Click to enlargeG2 Esports got off to life in MSI 2023 with an emphatic 2-0 win over their Brazillian counterparts, but it wasn't all plain sailing, as it took a huge comeback in Game One to get the ball rolling.
According to G2's Mihael "Mikyz" Mehle, G2 Esports started their opening fixture as "overconfident", and it took a bit of patience and adjustment to pool together and get the job done.
"It was a good series, but we were a bit shaky. Game One was very shaky. I feel like we were very overconfident at the start, so we didn't know if our game plan was going to work, and even when it was we kept trying to reach for more," Mikyx told GGRecon in a post-match press conference following their emphatic opening victory.
"But with the second game we can take a lot of confidence from that because it was very one-sided and our plans came to fruition" he added.
Mikyx plays down early Scrims indicators
Despite starting in the Play-Ins stages, all eyes were on G2 Esports as early notions suggested that the LEC representatives have come in as the most-prepared sides. LNG superstar Kim "Doinb" Tae-sang started the hype for G2 after he was heard saying LEC sides had been "stomping on teams in scrims".
But Mikyx has downplayed this and hopes that G2 can keep up their on-field momentum rather than just that in practice.
"Scrims aren't the best indicator, especially when teams have travelled here and have jet lag. It's way easy for us to adjust as we've only had a two-hour flight. So we're not reading too much into it but I do think we can beat anyone," he said.
For Mikyx and G2 Esports, their MSI journey rolls on with a Round 2 game versus PSG Talon on Thursday, May 4, and their unbeaten streak continues after winning the event back in 2019 and not appearing in it since.
