The best & weirdest fairytale cards Magic The Gathering: Wilds of Eldraine
Magic The Gathering's Wilds of Eldraine set is finally here, and while a new set is always exciting regardless of the theme, this one feels a little extra special because it's based on classic fairytales and fables.
Basically, if the Brothers Grimm had put together a card game, it'd look a lot like Wilds of Eldraine, and while some are instantly recognisable here, some have allowed the designers at Wizards of the Coast to create nightmarish creatures.
We've picked out eleven of our favourites, and while we're not touching on how well they play or how viable they are in your next deck, we've picked the weirdest, cutest, and scariest new entries into the iconic card game.

Gruff Triplets
Click to enlargeWe all know the story about the Billy Goats Gruff, and while the Troll is represented in this set, we actually feel a little bit sorry for him now.
That's because the three Gruff Triplets are armed to the teeth, have Trample, and are all on the same card - meaning fighting them all would be unlikely to have been a fair fight.
Gallant Pie Wielder
Click to enlargeWe'd argue any Pie Wielder deserves a decent adjective, and Gallant certainly fits the bill as this pastry powerhouse flings flan across the battlefield.
As if that last sentence didn't give it away, we're quite keen on a pun here, too - so the flavour text describing "just desserts" is the cherry on top.
Ruby, Daring Tracker
Click to enlargeIf it wasn't entirely obvious from the red cape, Ruby is Wilds of Eldraine's version of Red Riding Hood - but she's not so little.
The crossbow is a nice touch, but Ruby also gets more power and health when she's backed up by powerful creatures - meaning it's probably the forest that's scared of her this time around.
Lord Skitter, Sewer King
Click to enlargeTotentanz Swarm Piper may be the actual Pied Piper stand-in for Wilds of Eldraine, but the real star of this fable's cards is Lord Skitter, a big ol' rodent with plenty of pals.
Honestly, we're a little suspicious of rat tails, and therefore this card gives us the creeps a little bit. Here's hoping for something a little nicer next…

Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender
Click to enlargeOh, thank goodness. Another food-themed card, Syr Ginger is adorable and looks pretty fierce, riding a little gingerbread horse into battle.
Syr Ginger also gets more powerful if your opponent has a Planeswalker - but you can also eat him to gain life. Sorry little guy.
The Goose Mother
Click to enlargeThe Goose Mother, at first gander (get it?), looks like a flock of geese. There's nothing scary about a flock of geese until you realise this flock share the same body, with seven heads on offer.
Like some kind of Elden Ring monstrosity, this feathered FromSoft boss is helpfully dubbed "Bird Hydra" when it comes to type (can't imagine there are a load of them), and we'd imagine it offers quite the chorus of honks, too.
Regal Bunnicorn

Horned Loch-Whale
Click to enlargeWe could be wrong, but this looks like it's bringing Moby Dick energy to Wilds of Eldraine, which we're here for. This naughty narwhal can be seen trying to take a bite out of another mythical creature in its card art, and judging by the tail in the background, is a big ol' creature indeed.
That size is backed up with a 6/6 rating, too, suggesting your opponents are going to need a bigger boat.
Mintstrosity
Click to enlargePossibly the best name on this list (although the next entry runs it close), the Mintrstrosity is, as the card type suggests, a "horror" - but it also looks weirdly tasty. One of the dangers of Sweettooth Village, we wonder if it can file down its limbs into candy cane spikes.
This card is doubly horrendous if you don't like mint, too.
Raging Battle Mouse
Click to enlargeThere are cards with names like Real-Scorcher Hellkite in this set, and then there's Raging Battle Mouse. How can you not love that? This red card helps you blitz through spells, too, so he's helpful as well as perfectly named.
We're also big fans of the card art that clearly shows soldiers running in terror from the incredible power of the Raging Battle Mouse. Never change, Magic, never change.
Devouring Sugarmaw
