Fallout showrunner hypes the series as ‘almost’ Fallout 5
While the video game curse still gives the odd cinematic blunder (we're looking at you, Uncharted), there's a renaissance of adaptations on the small screen. We'll admit that Netflix's Resident Evil was pretty dire, but with Twisted Metal, The Last of Us, and Halo's much-improved Season 2, the video game TV series is back.
There are a slew of upcoming releases that include Amazon's God of War series, Paramount's Knuckles, and the much-hyped Fallout. Westworld showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are putting their talents to good use on this apocalyptic adventure - hoping to fill the void left behind by the Fallout games
Amazon's Fallout is 'almost' Fallout 5
Click to enlargeFallout 5 is supposedly in the works at Bethesda, but with no release in sight, the world is expanding into other mediums. Speaking to Total Film, Nolan has hyped the Fallout series as a Fallout 5 stand-in. "Each of the [Fallout] games is a discrete story – different city, distinct protagonist – within the same mythology," explained Nolan.
He continued, "Our series sits in relation to the games as the games sit in relation to each other. It's almost like we’re Fallout 5. I don’t want to sound presumptuous, but it’s just a non-interactive version of it, right?" Seemingly confirming the live-action series as canon with the games, it will be interesting to see how these worlds are linked.
Still, Nolan and Joy's Fallout will be carving its own path. "From the first conversation with Todd [Howard, game director of Fallout 3 & 4, and an executive producer on the show] we were most excited about an original story," says Nolan. So, while elements like the Brotherhood of Steel and Mister Handy are familiar, expect a different take on them.
What's the latest on Fallout 5?
Click to enlargeSadly, aside from confirmation that Fallout 5 is presumably out there somewhere, there's no update on where Bethesda is up to with the next mainline entry. All efforts were being channelled in Starfield, and as work continues on its Shattered Space DLC, The Elder Scrolls 6 is finally entering production.
With The Elder Scrolls 6 still likely years away, we dread to think when we'll finally get our hands on Fallout 5. There's mounting pressure, with even Fallout creator Tim Cain admitting he's worried about where the series is heading. Still, with pitches for a move to a new setting like New Orleans, we're excited to see where the franchise goes next.
A renewed interest in the IP thanks to the live-action series can only be good for the games, and vice versa. Although there are still sceptics about video game adaptations, all signs point to Fallout being an epic on a par with Westworld. Well, its stellar first season, at least. Either way, we'll be seated for Fallout's April 12 release.
