Henry Cavill Speaks Out On Being Recast In The Witcher Season 4
It's all change in the Witcherverse, as Henry Cavill is officially done playing Geralt of Rivia in the fantasy series. Although Season 3 isn't even out yet, it'll be the last for Cavill as the White Wolf, as he's being replaced for The Witcher Season 4.
While most know The Witcher for CD Projekt Red's gaming series of the same name, it found a new legion of fans thanks to the live-action Netflix series. There's a lot going on with the IP, and alongside multiple new games and an animated series, the Cavill-led The Witcher is one of Netflix's biggest exports.

With Geralt being the MVP of The Witcher, fans shouldn't worry that he's about to be killed off. Instead, another Hollywood A-lister is taking over the role, with Liam Hemsworth nabbing the part. Although he's not quite as famous as his brother Chris, Liam Hemsworth has an impressive CV that includes everything from The Hunger Games to Neighbours.
Posting on Instagram, Cavill responded to the recast and championed Hemsworth to lead the next era of The Witcher. "My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4," said the star. "In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men."
Hemsworth posted similar sentiments, sharing the same logo from the series. The 32-year-old added: "As a Witcher fan I'm over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I'm honoured that he's handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf's blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I've been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I'm truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world."
Why Was Gerealt Recast On The Witcher?
It's currently unclear why Cavill is leaving as Geralt of Rivia, but given his cordial response, we guess it's a mutual decision between him and Netflix. Alongside rumours that he could be sipping vodka martinis as the next James Bond, Cavill recently confirmed he'll be reprising his role as Superman in the DC Extended Universe.
Quite simply, Cavill is probably too busy juggling other commitments to continue playing Geralt. Still, we imagine it's cost someone a small fortune to get him out and Hemsworth in. Having your lead depart three seasons in is a major shakeup, so it remains to be seen whether there will be fan backlash. The Witcher Season 3 is due out in the summer of 2023, but with no release date for Season 4, we might be waiting a while for Hemsworth to put on the wig. Here's hoping he looks as good in the bathtub.
