Everyone will be playing as Shrek in the rumoured Resident Evil PC port
The Spencer Mansion is calling our name, and some 28 years after we first stepped inside its dusty confines, Capcom could be preparing to bring the OG Resident Evil back in a big way. While we've seen remakes, remasters, and Director's Cuts over the years, there's always room for more.
Capcom has seen great success with the recent remake series, starting with 2019's Resident Evil 2 revamp and most recently giving us 2023's Resident Evil 4. As most of you look ahead to the seemingly inevitable Resident Evil 5 remake, others want to go back to the start…again.
Resident Evil (1996) PC port potentially leaked
The internet is awash with rumours that 1996's Resident Evil is coming back to PC. This wouldn't be the first time this Capcom classic has landed on PC, with it launching in Japan just a few months after it did on the PlayStation 1. Still, that was decades ago, making Resident Evil's original release inaccessible for modern PCs.
A mysterious PEGI rating has appeared online (via Gematsu), while a search of Resident Evil on the rating's site still lists the PC port with a June 18 date. That was seemingly when it was created, not a release date. However, fans expect it to drop imminently if it's the real deal.
If the rating is legitimate, there are questions about exactly what version of Resident Evil we'll be getting. As well as the 1997 Director's Cut (which is available as part of the PlayStation Classics collection) boasting new outfits, there was also the Director's Cut Dual Shock Ver which added a new symphonic soundtrack.
It's true that the first Resident Evil is already available on Steam, but that's based on the HD Remaster of the 2002 GameCube remake. This would mark a milestone moment because the true original version of Resident Evil has never made it onto digital storefronts.
Bring on Shrek
Even though it might not rock the Resiverse to its core, Capcom could make some serious money by releasing the franchise's great-grandfather. As players have noted on Reddit, the modding potential of this could be huge.
One fan cheered, "Make any classic game available on Steam. Let modders go ham. Perfect retro release achieved. Hell yeah." Others are taking it one step further, with speculation a Classics Collection of the original trilogy is waiting in the wings
Modding PC games has become the norm these days, with the likes of ToastedShoes becoming known for their hilarious modding skills. Everything from Elden Ring to Helldivers 2 has been given a facelift, with the latter being turned into a full-blown Star Wars game.
The first thing we'll do is turn Chris Redfield into Shrek and blast up the Spencer Mansion with Thomas the Tank Engine as the final Tyrant boss, but on the more serious side, the world is our oyster. Want to add extra levels, give the original Resident Evil an Ada Wong-inspired DLC, or do something else? It's all possible if the title gets a modern PC release.
