Square Enix has made huge strides in making Final Fantasy the game it had always hoped to be. Pushing the franchise from a 16-bit series with stories that flourished in spite of its hardware limitations, now being bright and expansive RPG titles that break boundaries for visual fidelity and action.

It's no surprise that the remakes of Final Fantasy 7 have been so great for existing and new fans alike, bringing the iconic story into the modern era with great sparkle. Fans are wondering what classic games could be on the table to receive remakes in a similar fashion, and now, it looks like we might already have our answer.

It looks as though Square Enix could be gearing up for a huge project once the remakes for Final Fantasy 7 have concluded, as one podcast appearance has put to the fans that there could be a big new remake yet to come.

Speaking with the My Perfect Console podcast, the Director of Chrono Trigger put it to fans of both the franchise and RPGs at large what they’d like to see next from the series.

Yoshinori Kitase asked players which of three avenues they’d rather see Square Enix take with the original iconic RPG. Would they want a port, a graphical remaster, or a total ground-up remake à la Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

He notes that the latter would be an incredibly expensive and time-consuming project, but it likely won't change your minds. The prospect is immense, and as Chrono Trigger has been too quiet for too long, its return in the form of a huge 3D remake could be incredible.

We could also get a Link's Awakening-like remake of Chrono Trigger

After putting it to fans that they could be getting a Final Fantasy 7-esque remake in the future, podcast host Simon Parkin adds that Nintendo's approach to the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was impressive, and Kitase thanked Parkin for his input. Interesting.

Though many would love to see Chrono Trigger brought to life in the biggest way possible, a remake in this style would make perfect sense. Are we too greedy to ask for both? It's been a long time since Chrono Cross rounded out the series in 1999, and with the mysterious Chrono Break trademark never turning into anything, we're long overdue for a return.
