Xbox announces summer showcase, hints at Call of Duty 2024 news
It's coming to that time of the year where the biggest game publishers in the world are looking to showcase what the future looks like. Whether it is game updates or new releases, summer marks an important period in the gaming calendar.
And now, Xbox has revealed that it will be throwing its hat in the ring again with another annual update, where it will also be putting its cards on the table for a "redacted" franchise update.
Following competitor's like-minded showcases such as Nintendo Direct and Sony State of Play, Microsoft has announced the Xbox Showcase 2024, and it could be its meatiest one yet.
Xbox announces Games Showcase for June 2024
Today, Microsoft has announced that the Xbox Games Showcase will be returning for its 2024 instalment and will arrive on Sunday, June 9.
"We’re excited to share updates from our partners and our own creative teams across Activision, Blizzard, Bethesda, and Xbox Game Studios," said Phil Spencer on Twitter.
Already, people are expecting to see what's going on under the hood of Hellblade 2, the Shattered Space DLC for Starfield, and the soon-to-be-released Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
Of course, the more ambitious fans among us will all be hoping for something from Elder Scrolls too, as Bethesda reportedly continues to plod along with its development.
Call of Duty reportedly tipped to feature in upcoming Xbox showcase
The Xbox Games Showcase 2024 will be followed by another deep-dive of a "beloved franchise", as the publishers have also announced "[Redacted] Direct".
This will be much akin to the Starfield Direct preview that was aired in 2023, and early imagery for the event appears to be hinting towards Call of Duty.
The [Redacted] Showcase has also been "verified" as Call of Duty, as leakers have noticed the initial codename for the 2024, "Project Cerberus" has the same logo as what Xbox has used for the showcase reveal.
Call of Duty 2024, or Black Ops Gulf War, has already been reported to be getting an October release, as per Phil Spencer himself.
Previous Call of Duty showcases have come in similar windows, although they haven't been a part of a wider showcase for ten years. Still, given Activision Blizzard's merger with Microsoft, it could mark the first time in a decade in which the shooter will be revealed on-stage.
Xbox appears to have quite the lineup for 2024 and early 2025, and the Games Showcase might be one of its juiciest yet. According to The Verge's Tom Warren, Microsoft will reveal a new Gears of War title (we reported on this recently), as well as a date for Starfield's Shattered Space expansion.
