Long before Call of Duty hatched and started dominating the jungle, the prehistoric FPS genre was run by the colossal dinosaurs DOOM and its spin-off series Quake.

While there was the obvious hindrance of low-performing consoles back when DOOM ran the show, the "father" of the genre snapped through the competition like a hungry T-Rex. Despite being 30 years old, this fossil has a legacy that ripples through the entire arcade shooter genre - having its bones studied and celebrated.

DOOM might now have been eclipsed, despite Eternal (2020) notching up a worthy 88 rating on Metacritic, but its successor, Call of Duty, is now paying homage to the series that laid the foundation for the genre. Modern Warfare and Warzone Season 6 has an impressive DOOM bundle that includes a retro surprise.

Call of Duty's DOOM bundle pays homage to the genre 'Father'

Launched back in 1993 on the likes of MS-DOS, Sega 32X, Atari Jaguar, and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), DOOM has been dubbed as "inarguably the most important game" in the genre. With this in mind, it makes sense that Call of Duty is honouring it with a collaborative bundle.

Call of Duty's DOOM crossover adds to weapons: a "Super Shotgun" and a "Chainsaw" Melee Blueprint. Both have a Pixel Spray Death Effect akin to the old-school DOOM graphics, where blood and gore are blasted out of the enemy after a kill.

These effects also get progressively more bloody with every kill in a reactive-like manner. most impressively, these DOOM weapons also come with the OG 1993 low-FPS graphics. Although it looks like you're lagging, it's actually a fun and expressive token of how DOOM was played back in the day.

Importantly, the Pixel Spray Death Effect has and no physical effect on your shooting and performance. You can simply enjoy these retro graphics while still racking up those kills.

With the DOOM bundle resonating with the most nostalgic gamers, fans have instantly applauded what looks like Call of Duty's most ingenuous crossover yet.

One player was quick to confess his love for it, saying, "Ok this is f-in incredible, THIS is the kind of effort we like to see put into bundles and collabs."

Other Call of Duty personalities also weighed in with adoration. "This looks fantastic, whoever worked in this should be insanely proud," said FPS streamer Ali "Myth" Kabbani. "This is magical," added caster Miles Ross, with the LA Thieves page also commenting, "Ok that's heat."

It seems like the new DOOM bundle has now set the bar for the Call of Duty crossovers.
