Nintendo officially confirms Switch successor - but it isn’t coming soon

After years of speculation and swirling rumours, the next era of the Nintendo Switch has finally been confirmed. Nintendo repeatedly shut down the idea of a Switch Pro, and as time rolled on, it became evident that whatever came next would be a true successor to the 2017 console.

As one of the best-selling consoles of all time, it makes sense that the House that Mario built is keen to continue that success with something that feels like a true evolution of the Switch. We've heard a lot about bigger and better, but hopefully, this won't be another Wii U situation.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed the existence of the next console and said that it would be a successor to the Switch. Promising that the next Switch will be announced this fiscal year, he reminded us that the OG Switch was announced back in 2015, nine years ago.

Despite highlighting a Nintendo Direct in June 2024 to announce which games are coming in the rest of 2024, Furukawa added the caveat, "But this will not include the successor model. Please do not misunderstand." This dashes hopes of the Switch successor coming in 2024 and fuels those fires that it's been delayed until 2025...if not later.

As there's no mention of the Nintendo Direct featuring the Switch successor, it's also possible that the mythical console will skip this showcase for a later date. We know it will be 'announced' before the end of this fiscal year (before March 31, 2025), but that doesn't give us much to go on in terms of a release date.

Remember that after the first Switch was announced in March 2015, it would be two full years until it was released. The idea of having to wait until 2027 to get our hands on the next Switch doesn't bear thinking about. Come on, we need a Super Mario Odyssey sequel.
