Despite turning out some absolute bangers that players have loved, Square Enix seems to be lagging behind. Attention turned pretty quickly to the success (or lack thereof) of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, a game that fans and critics alike adored but, from early reports, didn't exactly wow when it comes to sales.

The news was pretty shocking, as the second part of a remake trilogy for a beloved franchise should've performed well. Seemingly in response to some similar frustrations, Square Enix is changing tack - and chances are, its games will be better for it.

A new document from Square Enix has indicated that big changes are coming to the way the company produces games, and fans are more than happy to welcome this new way of creating.

The document insists that Square Enix will be making a strict "shift from quantity to quality," stating that teams "will pursue a shift from quantity to quality as its medium- to long-term philosophy regarding the DE segment’s portfolio.

"To that end, it will first work to establish the optimal portfolio, striking a balance between a ‘product-out’ approach that reflects the imaginations of its employees to the utmost, and a ‘market-in’ approach that leverages customers’ voices and data to inform development efforts."

Square Enix will apparently "strive for a regular launch cadence, focusing its development efforts and investments on titles with substantial potential to be loved by customers for years." The document also reveals that a new focus will be put on multiplatform releases, with the company shooting for its AAA releases to spread more widely across the industry.

These changes are hugely welcome for players, especially as they've seen it work so well for industry compatriots Capcom. The team released only a couple of major titles in the last year, but the quality has been so high that they're selling in droves.

It's an approach that can only lead to better games, so players are truly thrilled to see Square Enix take a similar approach after a few financial disappointments. The future of Final Fantasy 7 remakes could be spaced across Xbox and PC as well as PlayStation, and for many, this is cause enough for celebration.
