Poppy Playtime movie is here to dethrone Five Nights at Freddy’s
The video game movie genre has undergone one hell of a transformation over the last few years, and it's a good job, too, because we're not sure how many more clangers like 2005's Doom we could've managed.
With The Super Mario Bros. Movie topping the box office with an easy billion dollars, it's clearer than ever that the world of video games is untapped for both financial and critical success. Five Nights at Freddy's became Blumhouse's biggest success ever, while the less-watched Werewolves Within was a critical smash.
There's still plenty to look forward to, and it seems that with the success of Five Nights at Freddy's, unorthodox horror isn't finished yet with unexpected video game adaptations. From Chucky to MEGAN, what is our obsession with murderous toys?
Poppy Playtime is getting its own movie
Click to enlargeAlthough it was only a matter of time, it has been officially revealed that the kiddie-themed horror game of Poppy Playtime has moved into development. The film will be headed up by Legendary Entertainment in collaboration with the game's team at Mob Entertainment.
Don Murphy and Susan Montford at Angry Films will produce, with Poppy Playtime being the third collaboration between the producers and Legendary. They previously collaborated on a remake of 1978's Faces of Death and a new Buck Rogers movie.
There are currently no plot details on the Poppy Playtime movie, but it's expected to follow a similar structure to the game itself. The 2021 episodic horror features the ex-employee of the successful Playtime Co. toy company returning to the factory. They discover the toys have gained sentience and, seemingly, a lot of rage.
It's clear that Legendary is shooting for the success of Five Nights at Freddy's with this movie, and with a FNaF sequel already locked in, it's hard to blame them if Poppy Playtime can get anywhere near that level. We'll take a silly horror movie any day of the week, so you won't catch us complaining.
