Witcher dev “doesn’t see a place for microtransactions in single-player games” after Dragon’s Dogma 2 fallout
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is proving to be an exciting adventure for players, but the fans who have wanted to get involved are having to wade through plenty of drama to get there.
The game is an exciting fantasy romp, but even with that in mind, players have been hugely disappointed by Capcom’s clear desire to make some extra cash on top of the already expensive cost of entry with Gaol keys, gems and more making up a list of items that can be found in-game, but are being flogged to the player for an extra cost.
It’s not a good look for Capcom no matter how hard they might try to duck around claims of greed - and now, another gaming giant has stepped up to decry the practice of cramming microtransactions into single-player games.
CD Projekt Red comes down on microtransactions in single-player games
In the wake of drama surrounding Dragon’s Dogma 2’s approach to microtransactions, a CD Projekt Red team member has been asked about the appearance of the tactic in single-player games, and it seems that their feelings are clear, even if they don’t rule out the fact that they could come to use them in their upcoming multiplayer projects.
When asked in a conversation with Stockwatch about the practice of microtransactions in CD Projekt Red games, Chief Financial Officer Piotr Nielubowicz has said succinctly “We do not see a place for microtransactions in the case of single-player games, but we do not rule out that we will use this solution in the future in the case of multiplayer projects.”
The quote mentions Capcom nowhere, but it’s hard not to see the quote taking place in the current context of lash-back against paid extras in games that, ultimately, should come with everything packaged into it.
What are Cyberpunk’s multiplayer projects?
As of right now, we have mere hints about the future of CD Projekt Red in a multiplayer sense, but it is said that the multiplayer mode that was once intended to be featured in Cyberpunk 2077 is now in the works for its sequel. Still, it's early days and the next game in the series is expected to be some time away yet.
Still, it's an exciting notion for some, while others aren't so sure. Either way, if it happens, it’d mark a new era for CD Projekt Red, potentially leading them to take on online giants like GTA Online, Call of Duty, or Destiny 2. It’d be one hell of a shift, but we’ll certainly take it.
