Why we think The Last of Us Part 2 will come to PC
Since its release, more and more TLOU fans have been wondering whether The Last of Us Part 2 will get a PC release. Although the Steam and Epic Games Store version of Part 1 got slammed as the worst PC port ever, gamers are keen to see if Part 2 will also make the jump.
Quite frankly, we believe that a PC port of the Last of Us Part 2 isn't a question of "if" but more a matter of "when?".
So, let's dive into exactly why we think The Last of Us Part 2 will be coming to PC at some point in the future.
Why we think The Last of Us Part 2 will come to PC
Click to enlargeEven though there are no official plans for a TLOU Steam or Epic Games Store release right now, we think The Last of Us Part 2 will come to PC eventually as, following the track record of PC versions of PlayStation exclusives in the past, it's usually a case of "for now".
To elaborate, we're referring to Sony's past of never announcing a PC port for a PS4/PS5 exclusive until long after its original release.
For example, Horizon Zero Dawn's PC port didn't come out until August 2020, more than 3 years after its PS4 launch. Spider-Man was released in 2018, and didn't come to PC until 4 years later in August 2022. God of War (2018), arguably one of the best games of all time alongside The Last of Us, also had a 4 year wait to come out on PC - released in January 2022.
All in all, Sony likes to wait on bringing games to platforms like Steam- not just taking time to gauge interest from the wider PC community, but also to space out releases to build anticipation.
In the case of The Last of Us Part 1, it was actually the longest awaited PlayStation-to-PC port so far since it had been 10 years since the original game's release on PS3. By waiting not only until the Part 1 remake on PS5 came out, but also the full release of the HBO series adaptation, Sony is honing its output. Hence, PC releases come about when demand is at its highest.
Ironing out the kinks & TLOU Season 2
Click to enlargeAlthough the window of PlayStation-to-PC ports has shortened slightly, I believe developer Naughty Dog has two additional reasons for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC taking as long as it has, along with us still needing to wait a while longer for an official reveal.
One is that The Last of Us Part 1 PC port only came out in early 2023 - most notably with so many glitches that were too funny to ignore that Steam even started offering refunds. Meanwhile, on the more positive side, Sony will have almost definitely noted the extra game sales around The Last of US TV series - most notably a 238% sales jump after the show's launch in the UK.
Although production on TLOU Season 2 was put on hold due to the Writers Guild of America Strike, we think Sony is undoubtedly biding its time to synergise the announcement of the live-action follow-up with The Last of Us Part 2 coming to PC, so each can build hype for the other.
As such, developer Naughty Dog can take the extra time to iron out all the technical wrinkles to not repeat the chaos of Part 1's release, and capitalise on the next season of the live-action adaptation as well.
The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered might be in development
Click to enlargeThe final big reason why The Last of Us Part 2 is coming to PC in our opinion is because of the supposedly accidental reveal that a remastered version of the PS4 game might be happening via a developer's LinkedIn profile.
The reference to the game on the profile was soon removed, but it was still a big hint that The Last of Us Part 2 is likely getting a remastered version for PS5. If Naughty Dog is following the same release pattern it had with Part 1 on PS5, it's fair to assume that a PC version will soon follow.
