If 2024 has already proved anything, it's that the gaming night is long and full of terrors. In a year that promised to do better in terms of layoffs and studio closures, we've already seen last year's job losses eclipsed by mass redundancies at Microsoft, Sony, Riot Games, Electronic Arts, and more.

While the year is stacked with upcoming releases like Senua's Saga: Hellblade II and the Star Wars: Dark Forces remaster, we've already seen Warner Bros. stumble with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Thankfully, the publisher could have another major IP up its sleeve.

Gamers demand a Game of Thrones game from Warner Bros.

Known for holding the keys to the kingdoms of The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and DC, WB's video game output could be huge. Unfortunately, it feels like it's mainly focused on TV and movies - yielding equally questionable results.

Now, a wild rumour claims that a familiar studio could be trying to unite the Seven Kingdoms and go where no developer has gone before. We know Game of Thrones bowed out with a disappointing Season 8 in 2019, but as the wide world of Westeros branches out in spin-offs, we're asking, where are our Game of Thrones video games?

Over on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit, someone shared a job listing for a Creative Director at Warner Bros. Montreal. You might remember it's the studio that gave us Gotham Knights in 2022. There's a mention of it being a game for the next generation of consoles and a suggestion that it's already started pre-production.

Others in the thread quickly started to speculate what it could mean, with one mentioning how WB has discussed its four big IPs (Mortal Kombat, DC, Harry Potter, and GoT). They added, "Considering they have other studios working on MK, DC, and HP. I wonder if they might task WB Montreal with making the first AAA Game of Thrones title."

Someone else chimed in, "It's the only IP that WB Games aren't taking advantage of, and with House of the Dragon reigniting those in the fanbase who were soured by the end of GoT, you'd imagine WB would be keen to strike whilst the iron is hot and get something made."

Why are there no big Game of Thrones games?

Even though HBO has had continued success with House of the Dragon and has upcoming adaptations like The Sea Snake, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, Snow, and an untitled one focusing on Aegon's Conquest, we still feel that peak Thrones hype might've died down a bit.

It's a shame that we never really had a video game that cashed in on the show's highs. The closest we got was Telltale's Game of Thrones, which was cancelled after just one season. Cyanide failed to make it big with either the strategy-based Game of Thrones: Genesis or its 2021 action-RPG Game of Thrones.

Since then, there's been a steady stream of all the typical base-defending mobile games, a Reigns spin-off, and Yoozoo's MMORTS Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming. Most simply don't pay attention to Game of Thrones games, which would be harder to do if we got a mainstream release from WB Montreal.

There are some obvious drawbacks - namely the lacklustre reception that Gotham Knight received as an inferior spiritual successor to Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy. We're not sure there are many out there asking for a Gotham Knights sequel, so it could be in WB Montreal's best interests to try something new. Either way, we're ready to fly our banners!
