It's fair to say the Joker has done some pretty dark things since his introduction in 1940, with Batman's archnemesis remembered for everything from crippling Barbara Gordon to killing Lois Lane and Superman's unborn child, and even stapling his own dismembered face back on.

Mark Hamill's Joker of the Arkhamverse was also pretty unhinged, injecting himself with TITAN and becoming a literal monster. Joker's death at the end of Arkham City was pretty definitive, although it wouldn't be a Rocksteady game without Mr. J. However, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League looks like it's introducing one of the darkest Jokers yet.

While Hamill has sadly stepped away from voicing the Joker, there's a new iteration of the villain on the way. An Elseworlds version of Joker is hopping universes and teaming up with Kill the Justice League staples Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark.

New audio has appeared on the Kill the Justice League subreddit, teasing an even more maniacal Joker. Here, we hear him say, "This brings back memories of my old Suicide Squad...they're all dead." Taking things on an even darker track, he continues, "What a tragedy, what a heartbreaker, the sprays of blood, the smell of singed hair, the viscera."

Here's where it takes a real twist, as Joker adds, "I'd definitely do it differently this time around, cleaner...I killed my team because I truly cared about them. But even though I've only just got to know you guys, I care about you that much, too."

Part of Kill the Justice League's fun was the camaraderie between the quartet, and while they squabbled like siblings, we saw their relationships blossom as they took to the mean streets of Metropolis to take on Brainiac and the titular Justice League. By the sounds of it, they'll need to watch their backs with Joker around.

Before the credits even rolled on Kill the Justice League, we were warned this wouldn't be the end of the story. An impressive roadmap has teased at least four DLCs, with a gender-flipped Mr. Freeze, Deadshot's daughter, and Deathstroke all seemingly on the way. Of course, Joker comes first.

Kill the Justice League Season 1 is due to release in March 2024, although there's no exact date. Other leaks have teased new outfits, mentions of Two-Face and other villains, as well as a pretty major story spoiler that some of the game's big deaths might not be sticking.

With Rocksteady clearly keen to explore the potential of Elseworlds, Kill the Justice League has likely only just dipped its toe into the wacky. A truly unhinged Joker who is only out for himself sounds like the perfect addition to Task Force X, but only time will tell if our Harley is making goo-goo eyes at this new Clown Prince of Crime.
