Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth reignites the two-disc drama

Though to many, June 8's Summer Game Fest was a pretty disappointing reflection of the state of the gaming industry without E3, there was one group of fans who ate well, and that’s the Final Fantasy fans.

Though we were worried SGF would end with the reveal of the new Final Fantasy 7-themed mobile game, the 'one last thing’ of Summer Game Fest was the full reveal trailer of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth - the second half of the classic title brought to life in remake form.

Gamers have plenty to be excited for in the new approach to the story, including finding out how they’re going to pull off that tragic death - but there's something that we need to get out of the way first. And that's actually loading the game.

Here we go again. The drama of games coming on two discs is back, as it has been revealed that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will require the use of two discs to be played in full when it comes to its physical edition.

PlayStation actually seemed pretty pleased about the news, revealing the info on Twitter in a pledge to advertise the game. Sony seemingly used the news as a positive to assert just how big the fantasy title actually is.

Fans are in two minds about this news. Similarly sized games like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption came on two discs before, but others feel this is just an issue with the game's compression. It's made some worried that the digital download of the game will be incredibly hefty when it comes to storage space.

When dealing with a game that has the sheer size that demands two discs, there are two options for the devs to consider - either plough ahead with the double discs, or opt for a disc that demands a massive download upon insertion into the console.

Ultimately, the double-disc play is the one that will help to ensure that the outing will be playable in the future, so it feels very much like a good thing. It's inconvenient for players, but to lose the game to the throes of time like many before would be far, far worse. Get that launch day booked off work now, because it will take up plenty of time to install Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth too.
