Jedi: Survivor director is already looking at a sequel

Star Wars is known for its trilogies, and while we're yet to recapture the magic of George Lucas' original saga that concluded with Return of the Jedi in 1983, the prequel trilogy that started with Phantom Menace and sequel trilogy that ended with The Rise of Skywalker both put up a good fight.

Video game trilogies for Star Wars are rarer, with the likes of Battlefront, Knights of the Old Republic, and Force Unleashed failing to get their long-rumoured third games. That could all change with talk of a third game starring Cal Kestis.

Is a Jedi: Survivor sequel already on the way?

Following the success of 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order merging Star Wars and Soulsborne games in a way we never thought possible, it was no surprise that Respawn Entertainment was quickly recruited for a sequel. 

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is coming on April 28 (we think it missed the trick of a May 4 release), but according to its Game Director, it won't be the end of the road for Cal's story.

Speaking to IGN, Game Director Stig Asmussen confirmed that talks of going beyond a second game were even happening before Survivor was given the green light. Asmussen said, "I always wanted to see this as a trilogy. How can we take Cal and the crew to new places beyond what we were doing in the first game?"

He continued, "We had a pretty decent idea of timeframe where we wanted Survivor to take place, what the stakes were going to be, what the tone of the game was going to be, what Cal was going to be up against, and how the crew was going to factor into that. And there's ideas of what we could do beyond that as well."

As for what it'll entail, he shied away from plot details but said, "I think it's a pretty safe assumption" when asked whether it'll be upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 from Survivor's UE4. So, strap in for a potential Jedi trilogy with our red-haired hero.

Just because a third game is on the way, that doesn't necessarily mean Cal is safe in Jedi: Survivor, and as we learned with Galen Marek in Force Unleashed, he could still kick the bucket before the final credits roll. 

Is Cal Kestis coming to live-action Star Wars?

With Cal back on our screens in pixel form, it will boost the fandom's love of the Jedi outcast. Disney is taking the Marvel Cinematic Universe approach with Star Wars, as multiple live-action and animated shows are planned for each year. So, where's Cameron Monaghan?

The setting of the Jedi games in the aftermath of Order 66 puts it in that sweet spot between trilogies alongside the likes of The Bad Batch, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor. Many expected Kestis to appear in Kenobi, but with hopes of a second season, it could still happen.

As Cal hasn't appeared outside of the games (yet), there's a chance a grizzled version of him could pop up even further down the line. Remember, fans think they spotted BD-1 in The Book of Boba Fett, leaving questions over Cal's ultimate fate. 

Providing Cal isn't shoehorned into one of the many fluctuating movie pitches that are floating around and keep getting cancelled, we'll be happy to see Monaghan reprise his role. Live-action Cal Kestis standalone series when?
