To be fair to Nintendo, we didn’t think they had it in them.

After the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, we’d have thought that Nintendo would be working with Illumination Entertainment until the end of time, but it looks like there’s a little more creativity in Nintendo when it comes to their movie plans.

Bizarrely, it looks as though the movie we expected would never happen is happening, and Nintendo has revealed the news in the no-fanfare, no-frills way that we’ve come to expect of Nintendo. You heard right - the Zelda movie is happening.

The Legend of Zelda is officially coming to the big screen - in live-action

Nintendo has officially done the unthinkable, and after rumours of a cancelled Netflix series dampened hopes everywhere, it looks like Nintendo is kicking back with the announcement of a new live-action movie based on their biggest and best adventure series, The Legend of Zelda.

The reveal itself came in a shockingly low-key way - it appeared online in the form of a blog post and tweets, with Miyamoto himself making the reveal from the official Nintendo account.

This is Miyamoto,” he says. “I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films.

You might recognise the name Avi Arad, as he is a film producer in high demand for his work on Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, X-Men and the original Spider-Man movie by Sam Raimi. He also assisted in production on Morbius, so do with that information what you will.

The Legend of Zelda’s movie adaptation has officially started development

The tweets continue to mention that the film is now in active development, with Arad in active tow.

I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production,” adds Miyamoto. “It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.

It might be some time away, but mere confirmation that a movie based on The Legend of Zelda is on the way is pretty incredible. We’d ask who’d have thought it, but seeing the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, we know that the answer is everyone.
