Highlight:

  • Legacy Items are gear from the Season 3 Seasonal Realm
  • They can't be used with the new Masterworking and Tempering systems

Each season of Diablo 4 introduces plenty of new content and changes to the existing game, and with Season 4, the advent of Legacy Items has changed how you look at and improve gear.

The game is all about the hoarding of loot that you collect from masses of enemies, chests, and as rewards for Nightmare Dungeons you take part in. This loot can then be improved in a few ways, but older loot from Season 3 and before are now marked as Legacy Items.

What does this mean, and how does it work? Learn more about the new Legacy Item system below.

Legacy Items explained

Legacy Items are pieces of gear from Season 3's Seasonal Realm that has been transferred over to the Eternal Realm with the beginning of Season 4.

On the item description window, any of the gear that meets these criteria will be labelled a 'Legacy Item' in red.

This distinction is now important with the release of Season 4, as it added big changes to the crafting systems in the game. Legacy Items cannot be used with the new Masterworking and Tempering systems, only items from the Season 4 Seasonal Realm, however, they can still be upgraded or customised with the vanilla crafting options available.

While any Legacy Items you still hold will be useful in the Eternal Realm for a while, once the Season 4 items are transferred over, I recommend making the switch so you can keep improving your gear with the new crafting systems.

Tempering and Masterworking give big stat changes to items, and so any gear that can't make use of these mechanics will naturally fall behind in comparison.
