New GTA Online players may wonder if a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription is necessary to enjoy the game with other players.

GTA V was first released 10 years ago to overwhelming critical acclaim, but the Online mode on the other hand had a much rockier start to its life.

While its original release on the seventh gen did not require an online subscription, it's now been ported to newer consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. So, check out if you need a subscription service for online, so you can find out if you can jump straight into some heists.

Do you need PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass to play GTA Online?

You will need a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass membership to play GTA Online on consoles, with the particular subscription depending on your chosen platform.

There are multiple versions of both these services, but you only need the lowest tier of each one (PS+ Essential and Xbox Game Pass Core respectively) to play online.

You can sign up to these from your console directly, and after confirming your subscription, GTA Online will be immediately available to play (as long as it's installed first).

Another option, which can be cheaper, is to purchase prepaid cards. These come in the form of bundles, ranging from a few months all the way to a year, but they offer you access to PS+ or Game Pass at a reduced rate.
